I wanted to see the ads before signing anything, so I googled and found this BBC News item. It looks like the ASA doesn't regulate political ads any more, and the Electoral Commission doesn't either. Nice.

'Legislation passed in 2000 provides scope for people to be prosecuted for statements or advertising deemed defamatory or which could incite racial hatred. But critics claim a loophole in the law allows misleading or factually incorrect material to go unchallenged.'

This country really needs some serious oversight of political campaigning and advertising. I'm still in a state of disgust over the fact that there appears to have been no recourse for complaining about my local now-MP baldly lying in his campaign about who his real opponents were (the thrust of his campaign was 'VOTE FOR US OR THE TORIES WILL TOTALLY WIN' - in the end he beat the Lib Dem candidate by about 150 votes).
