Whoa. That is astonishing. I found the single pendulum plausible and a neat trick. The double... mindblowing. Awesome trick :)

What's interesting to me about that observation (which I also share) is that I think that it means that a human could fairly easily learn to do the single pendulum trick by hand, but the double pendulum looks like it would be nearly (or perhaps entirely) impossible for a human to duplicate by hand.

pretty much every balancing act has already mastered single invert pendula.
I've seen very few who can balance two stacked objects from a moving start, but many from static

I'd love to know what sort of feedback loop the carriage uses

nice to se equilibrium maintained towards the end [∑H=0], where the carriage dips left to maintain joint inertia :)
