It'll be a bundle of fibre optic cables, so it's very upgradeable.

It's certainly a major investment but a 100Gb backbone connection isn't _especially_ big between two large and geographically close (on a global scale) cities.

If they're bundling, say, OC-768/STM-256 lines then 100Gb shouldn't too hard to reach. Not really sure why it's news :)

Isn't it 100G on a single wavelength, so one 100G interface rather than 10x10G or 3x40G ? Using DWDM and 64 wavelengths it'd be upping the capacity per fibre from 640Gbps (10Gbps) or 2.5Tbs (40Gbs) to 6.4Gbps. Janet already runs 40Gbps per transceiver on the main backbone around the UK.

Yes - that's along the lines of what I was thinking. OC-768/STM 256 connections are ~40Gb each.

EDIT: I will learn to read things properly instead of just glancing through LJ while I'm working :)

It seemed more insinuated that this is 100Gb on a single line terminating on a single interface. If they've cracked it (which seems backed up by Andy's further link below): well done. If they can apply the technology to existing, laid fibre then that's a good leap forward.

Does seem to suggest that it's a 100G Ethernet terminating on a single physical interface.

That's something I'm curious about - is fibre-optic easily upgradeable by just putting new transmitter/receivers on it? Or do you get different grades of cable?
