Bowling for Columbine

I still want to see Bowling for Columbine, but I've lost a little faith in Michael Moore after reading this.

While I don't agree with the NRA, the way he chopped up the speech is appalling.

As far as I'm aware, that sort of practice is quite common in the making of documentaries and features - even ones for TV news. Tragic really, but perhaps as much a reflection of us as the viewers in what we like to watch.

Bowling is still well worth going to see. Though some of the implications are dubiously created, there is an overall weight of truth behind a lot of the things Moore points out. And it is funny.

It's well worth seeing - leaving aside the NRA speeches, it still contain much good info.

My problem is that now that I know that he's happy to lie to make me take his side, I'm not inclined to believe anything at all he says.

Yes, i would agree. I'm bitterly disapointed. When you start manipulating to such a point, then you really don't have the right to hold yourself up as such a liberal, honest fellow. And no, splicing speeches isn't standard practice without making it clear that they are from different dates or times. (used to work with Amy Hardie, documentary filmaker). It's still not perfect, as it leaves the sub conscious with a sentence that perhaps someone didn't say, but it's better than outright visual lying.
