This evening Jane went out to the spa leaving me with both kids.
Which isn't a big deal - she's been down to London a few times for work, which means me getting them to nursery in the morning, back in the evening, feeding them, etc. And Gideon has generally stayed awake until she gets back home from London at 9-ish. He's not fallen asleep at home not attached to Jane since he was a tiny baby.
But... Gideon has had a new pattern in the last few weeks - he doesn't nap at the weekend if anything exciting is going on, and then crashes out asleep at 7pm. And today he was in the crèche at his normal nap time, and so was too excited to play with their toys to sleep.
Now, Jane wasn't going to get home from the spa until 9, so I was curious whether he would sleep before she came home, or fight it off. And if I could help him to make the sensible decision. So when I took Sophia through to read her to sleep at 8:00 I asked him if he wanted to keep us company.
He was up for that idea, but when I suggested he lie down in his bed while I read them both stories he realised what I was up to, and got very upset, demanding "My mummy!". So I reassured him that he didn't have to go to sleep, and once Sophia was asleep we'd go through to the other room and wait for mummy together.
Which mollified him somewhat, but he was still a bit tearful, so I offered him a hug. And about thirty seconds after lying down with him in his bed with his head on my chest I felt his breathing slow. I checked, and he was awake, so I told Sophia I'd lie there for two more minutes and if he was still awake I'd take him to the other room. Two minutes passed, he was asleep, and so was she, so I snuck off here to write this post!
Note: smartphones are *excellent* for being able to tell if the small child lying on you has gone to sleep. And the same for the small child across the room when you can't sit up to take a look. It's like having a periscope!
