andrewducker: (time to live)
I'm ⅔ of the way through Dark Souls 3 and I hit a boss that I couldn't just overwhelm with pyromancy* from a safe distance. And because I'm a ranged caster I've not put *any* levels into carrying capacity, and am basically running around in the lightest clothes in the game. So two hits from him squishes me flat.

And it was both nostalgic and glorious to go from "This is impossible, there's no way I can progress any further in the game!" to "I can do a bit of this, so long as I keep at range, but there's no way I can engage", to "This guy can't touch me at all, and I can dance around him taking no damage while utterly destroying him".

And that reminded me what I love about the Dark Souls series. That you *can* cheese your way past things if you don't fancy taking them head on, but the sheer joy comes from having something that seems impossible and then, once you've bashed your head off of it enough times, it becomes something you can beat easily because you've learned and improved.

Looking forward to the rest of the game, and then on to Sekiro. (And eventually to Elden Ring, but my current PC isn't really up to that, so it might have to wait until the kids aren't costing us £2k a month for nursery)

*Yhorm the Giant. Immune to fire. And there's a magic sword that can kill him in 5 hits, but it takes long enough to charge itself up each time that you have to spend a lot of time dodging attacks as he charges around the arena hitting you with a giant fiery mashing device.
