But to find out why I chose that subject line you'll have to read through stuff about my life*.
A few months ago the toilet fill valve stopped shutting off properly when it was flushed. It would shut off eventually, but frequently it would keep filling for a good thirty-second to a minute after it was full. Thankfully, the worst this caused was more water going down the toilet, which is what it's designed for, so not really a massive problem. I kept meaning to go to Screwfix (about two miles away**) but never actually bothered.
Until this Monday, when I got a phone call from Julie while I was over at

tisme's, teaching her about computers[3], telling me that the toilet was constantly refilling, and that she couldn't reach the stop-cock to turn off the water to that end of the flat.
So on Tuesday evening*** I got a bus from work to Screwfix (which would have worked better if I hadn't accidentally got onto another bus, rather than a bus that goes to somewhere _beyond_ Screwfix, but doesn't go past it), paid a shiny £9[5] for a new fill valve, brought it home (via more bus catastrophes, as the first one didn't appear - which I can't understand as they're GPS-tracked, so if it didn't exist it shouldn't have been on the board - and the second drove straight past), and installed it, thus making me feel more physically competent than I have in a long while. It was, of course, incredibly easy, but still.
The rest of the week has been reasonably quiet, except that my current project goes into production next Wednesday, and because we're running a little late I need to go into work tomorrow to support acceptance testers, and thus am not spending the weekend with Julie in Northern Ireland for her mother's 60th, and am instead relaxing in Edinburgh.
Which, initially, I thought meant I could go and see
the 25th anniversary showing of Akira at one of the local arts cinemas. However, despite advertising it repeatedly via their email, they've only put on one performance, with the result that it's completely sold out, and I will not get to (mentally) shout "TETSUOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!" at the screen for about fifteen minutes. Which is a shame.
Instead, I shall attempt to go and see Pacific Rim, if I can find people who fancy seeing giant robots fighting giant monsters.

**I just looked that up on Google Maps. I sometimes wonder if I don't write as much as I used to is because I have a compulsive need to defend myself against attack by ensuring that anything I say is accurate.
[3]This started about a year ago, but has been incredibly slow, with months passing between sessions at times, because we've both been horribly busy. We're now meeting up every two weeks though, which seems to be working ok. We started with transistors, and are slowly working our way towards the web, going over everything you could possibly want to know in-between, and having lots of digressions. It's more fun than a very fun thing, as I get to talk about computers a lot, and explain things a lot, and those are two of my favourite things.
****Obviously I came home on Monday evening and turned off the stop-cock.
