The context being a lunchtime conversation about when the changeover was at universities between "You aren't allowed to type essays." to "What do you mean you wrote this by hand?" When I went to university in 1990 I wasn't allowed to write essays on computer in my first year, but by third year it was allowed, and I believe it became expected/mandatory within the following five years.
