Neil Gaiman just won the Locus Best Novellette award for A Study in Emerald (available here), in which a certain Mr Holmes investigates certain Cthuloid goings on.  It's really rather good, made even better by the adverts which start each chapter:

Victor’s “Vitae”! An electrical fluid! Do your limbs and nether regions lack life? Do you look back on the days of your youth with envy? Are the pleasures of the flesh now buried and forgot? Victor’s “Vitae” will bring life where life has long been lost: even the oldest warhorse can be a proud stallion once more! Bringing Life to the Dead: from an old family recipe and the best of modern science. To receive signed attestations of the efficacy of Victor’s “Vitae” write to the V. von F. Company, 1b Cheap Street, London.

Scary Southern America. As the man says, education is the only solution.

Back from le Wedding du Bob, Lilian only got 5 hours sleep last night and was flaking out, so I took the opportunity to duck out before the Ceilidh started. Not that I don't like Ceilidh's on occasion, but I'm just not in the mood. Something niggling at me and I'm not sure what.

Got home, put Lilian to bed and came through to play with the computer. Idly surfing randomly, trying to find something that will keep me occupied or gain my concentration for more than 30 seconds, when I flick on Napster and do a search for U2 - last time I checked they didn't have any, and now suddenly they have all of it. Which makes me very happy indeed.

Zooropa...vorsprung durch technik
Zooropa...be all that you can be
Be a winner
Eat to get slimmer

Zooropa...a bluer kind of white
Zooropa...it could be yours tonight
We're mild and green
And squeaky clean

Zooropa...better by design
Zooropa...fly the friendly skies
Through appliance of science
We've got that ring of confidence

And I have no compass
And I have no map
And I have no reasons
No reasons to get back

And I have no religion
And I don't know what's what
And I don't know the limit
The limit of what we've got

No particular place names
No particular song
I've been hiding
What am I hiding from

Don't worry baby, it's gonna be alright
Uncertainty can be a guiding light
I hear voices, ridiculous voices
Out in the slipstream
Let's go, let's go overground
Take your head out of the mud baby

She's gonna dream up
The world she wants to live in
She's gonna dream out loud
She's gonna dream out loud
Dream out loud

I use Firefox to browse with on my home PC and at Lilian's. I have discovered a new addin which allows me to save my bookmarks on a central location (in this case an FTP server) so that whichever PC I am on loads the bookmarks (and saves them on exit). This means that I have my bookmarks no matter where I am - it even merges changes, so I can change them here and get the changes at home!

Now, I just need to do something similar with my .newsrc file and I'll be able to read news from everywhere too.
