For pretty much the first time in my life I feel organised. This is entirely down to my spiffy PDA, which I originally wanted so that I could write on the move, and has since become my calendar, to-do list, shopping list, reading material and games machine.
As a games machine it's merely a passing distraction (although Vexed was horribly addictive while I was beating it) and as reading material it fails on the grounds that I have to actually buy ebooks for it. But as an organiser it's absolutely amazing.
First of all I put in the more important events I needed to do (friend's birthdays, doctor's appointments, etc.), but I've now got on such simple things as wake-up times and general reminders, turning it into a general-purpouse alarm clock. The biggest different here is that before now I never felt that I could plan more than a week in advance. If someone asked me whether I was going to be free on the 7th of November I'd have no idea, but now I know where I'm going to be, and I don't mind booking myself up weeks in advance, because I know that I won't forget where I'm supposed to be. I used to have endless problems with double bookings and promising multiple people I'd do things with them, but not any more.
If this was the only functionality that the PDA afforded, that alone would be worth the money - just knowing that I don't have to worry about where I'm supposed to be at what time has been a huge relief. But there's more! After reading about it a few times I tracked down a copy of the Life Balance organising software. t's a to-do list replacement, something which you'd think would be very simple and dull. And you'd be wrong. It's halfway between a to-do list and project planner, allowing multiple tiers of tasks, so that I can tell it that I want to go see Return of the King, but first I have to put up an LJ post about it, book tickets and arrange a day off. I told it that those events have to occur in order, so only one of them appears on my to-do list at any one time.
I also added a list of household tasks and told it that they repeat every few days. Now they appear in my to-do list marked green for "not urgent" and slowly become more urgent over the time-period I set. Whenever I complete one it vanishes, appearing again as I get closer to it's due date. All the birthdays that I get presents for are also there, with a 7-day lead time, so they appear in my to-do list a fortnight ahead, become "important" a week later and move up the list slowly until I get around to them.
The strange thing is, unlike my previous efforts at being organized, this one actually seems to be taking effect - I was worried that I wouldn't actually use the functionality, but I'm now entirely reliant on it. If any of the rest of you have a PDA and are lacking in organization, I highly recommend you pick up a copy of Life Balance - there's a 30 day free trial, and I certainly didn't get through more than 5 days before realizing that I was going to be paying for it...
