Feelings, nothing more than feelings
Nov. 15th, 2002 05:11 pmYesterday afternoon we started in on our first joint project as part of our training. This will eventually link up with joint projects 2 and 3 to provide a small loans system to show (a) how complete systems interact and (b) that we can build large systems.
Yesterday afternoon was spent on design, this morning was spent coding and when, at 2:45, we left to go to a lecture (we get a lecture every Friday afternoon from a department head, to give us insight into the way the company works), I actually felt sad that I couldn't stay behind and get the damn thing working. I can't remember the last time I wanted to code. Certainly not for a year or so, and possibly not for several years. It was a great feeling, and I'm now going to have to wait until Monday before I can carry on with it.
The talk was good. The first one, last week, wasn't great - the manager basically read out pre-prepared slides listing each department and their responsibilities. It frequently sounded like she didn't actually know the exact meaning of the slides and it was all a bit lacklustre. This week the manager ignore the slides and she just went off at tangents, explaining how things were done and what the department was up to and how she fitted into it. This was far more interesting and gave us an idea of how actual development works at the company. I'd much rather hear someone talk about the good and the bad and what they've been up to than a dry list of departments (gosh, that sounds awfully self-evident).
