Moving right along
Jul. 19th, 2002 01:13 pmWell, that's my job finished.
As you all know, I'm moving to Edinburgh next week. Because of this, I had to get a credit check done, which included them talking to my employer to verify that I'm actually employed. While I was confirming with Michelle in HR that it was ok to tell them that, she mentioned that she'd have to tell them that my contract was up on the 2nd of September. I'd, of course, completely forgotten that I had only signed up for a year, and so this took me slightly by surprise. But I asked her what the situation was with it, and whether I'd be kept on, because otherwise I'd have to start looking for another position ASAP. I fully expected them to keep me on, as they have an IT shortage with two people, let alone with one.
Anyway, this morning, at around 10:00 I was called upstairs to the bosses office (he's away, so I thought this was odd) and told that due to an IT reorganisation planned for the near future (and possible outsourcing) they weren't going to renew my contract. But... due to my position of all-powerful god of computers, they weren't comfortable to have me in the building now I wasn't working there. So... they gave me a cheque for this month's rent, next month's rent and the tax from next month that I apparently don't have to pay. Hurrah!
So I'm now without employment, but with large wodges of cash. I don't have to commute to work from anywhere, and I'm free to go looking on the contract market. As usual, if anyone knows anyone that wants anyone, let me know.
A couple of notes about what happened - when I wandered down to my desk to grab 'stuff', Michelle escorted me (rightly enough, who knows what dastardly deeds I would have gotten up to). I told her that I could talk her through locking out my username from the system, as I had external access, and could bring the system crashing down from outside if I really felt like it. Obviously, I have no intention of doing so, but hey, if they don't trust me in the building, then I shouldn't have home access either, yes? I haven't checked to see if I've been locked out, because that would be highly illegal, but I doubt they will have done, due to point 2:
Graham's in Skye all this week. This means that when they sacked me, they left the whole company without any support for phone or computer systems. No backups will occur tonight. If something goes wrong, they're pretty much stuffed. I offered to work out the day, but they weren't happy with that, but it seems insane to me to leave the company wide open like that, especially when the phone system went wrong at the end of last week (fixed now, but being monitored - well, it was being monitored). Oh well, it's not my problem any more.
If anyone from the office is reading this, good luck to you all (yup, all of you, even the ones that I had friction with) and I'd like to say that despite the occasional problem, I learnt a lot there, and you were pretty much all good people to work with. You can reach me here.
