Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] marrog I discovered this government page o' stats which gave me what I wanted - albeit not adjusted for inflation. So I used the Bank Of England site to do so.
Year Median Mortgage - £/month Median Mortgage - £/month
(adjusted for inflation)
Median Mortgage as a % of Median Income
(Everyone)
Median Mortgage as a % of Median Income
(£1500-2000 income)
2001 312 386 16 16
2002 320 390 16 16
2003 319 378 16 16
2004 340 391 16 17
2005 400 448 18 19
2006 450 488 19 21
2007 482 501 20 23
2008 547 547 21 24
Sadly, what I don't have is figures for before that point. I'd love to push this back to 1970 or so. Anyone got any useful links?

http://www.mortgageguideuk.co.uk/mortgage-rates/mortgage-payments-perc-income.html has something basic, the mortgage lenders council charges for full access to the data

By 1500 - 2000:

- Is that gross or net?
- Assuming this is 'household' income?

I recently asked a friend for housing stats / information, and he said this:
Got the invitation this morning thanks, just haven't had a chance to
visit your app.

This is old, but basically predicted the housing downturn/crash based
on fundamentals:
http://www.housepricecrash.co.uk/pdf/abn-amro-home-truths-04042007.pdf,
it's probably the best intro to the fundamentals I've come across.

housepricecrash.co.uk, as the name suggests, is bearish in outlook,
but the stats are stats, many being updated versions of those in the -

Also, http://www.nationwide.co.uk/hpi/historical.htm

You're likely to have come across it already, but
http://www.upmystreet.com/properties/house-prices-in-uk.html is pretty
good. Also, I strongly recommend the land registry stats, though
lagged, as being the most neutral and inclusive (eg private / cash
sales are included).
You might find something useful in there.

This graph is for America, but it does take inflation into account and goes
back to 1890

If the UK's figures are anything like Scotland's it'll be tough to find much before the 80's that's much use.

This is what the people sitting in front of me at work produce by the way, might be some useful stuff.

We have some excellent internal briefing papers on the current market position, but that's not really useful for you!
