I've not been following recent developments in this aspect of the story particularly closely, but back in 2006 Yau was threatening to sue the New Yorker for defamation over that article. I can't find any further news, so I guess the lawsuit never manifested.

Is my attention span shot or is it a Brit/US cultural thing that I find that New Yorker article so longwinded and unbearable? I'm down past the second drop cap and there is still no meat.

Depends what you mean by "meat" - it's about the people and the politics, so it needs to fill you in on all the history there.
