According to the BBC article here doing an arts degree lowers your earnings potential by 10%.

For my American readers (damn your war-mongering hearts), A levels are the exams you take at 18 that decide whether you can carry on to university (and which one).

Seeing as one of the arguments for free university access is that it's good for the earnings of the country (and therefore taxes, etc.), maybe selective degree sponsorship will now be in order.

Of course, that's not the only argument for free/subsidised university access, but I'd really like to see a national debate on the subject.

But, actually, it's an argument used for fees more often than it is for subsidising university education: the "you'll earn more, so you should pay for it yourself" argument.

And I always like to bring to this discussion the fact that the gender earnings gap increases with every qualification. Does that mean women should pay lower fees? Or, by your argument, higher fees?

Yeah, Liberal Arts degrees don't help you out in the US, either. I'm technically a high school drop-out, and I'm doing better than a few of my friends that do have degrees.

Plus, I like my job. : p
