I know a few of you are upgrading to Windows 7 soon.  Which means (unless you're dumb enough to upgrade a Windows box) installing a whole bunch of applications from scratch.

If you want to make your life easier then I heartily recommend Ninite - which allows you to select a bunch of free utilities (like firefox, 7-zip, Flash, VLC, Picasa and dozens more) and then installs them all in one go.  Makes getting your machine up to scratch a heck of a lot easier.

Meh, I'm lazy... I'll be doing an "in place" upgrade when my Win7 disc arrives. My excuse, er, reasoning is that my Vista installation was only two months ago and I haven't done a lot of new software installation or patching since, and I've kept the registry tuned and the system maintained fairly carefully; there isn't a lot that'd be cleaned off by a fresh installation. That, and that my desktop has so much brute horsepower behind it, makes the hassle of wiping and restoring much less tempting.

-- Steve'll keep the utility in mind, though, if the upgrade doesn't take.
