I just read about the smoking thing and it seems a trifle harsh. 6 months would probably have been enough to get the message across, whereas 18 months seems over the top and a waste of money to keep him incarcerated.

Well, I have lots and lots of wonderful friends - but I also have lots and lots of free time, and most of my friends are busy people. Windows 7 good FSVO 'good' that means 'better than vista'.

But the last Hitchhiker's book was terrible. Dreaful, horrible. Like Adams knew he was milking the series, esp. when one character (Dent?) thinks at the end, thank god it's over.

I read a review of that calling it "Mostly Charmless."

But, then again, Adams is gone - maybe the new book will be ok?

I don't think Douglas Adams was happy with Mostly Harmless either. He described it as "a very bleak book" and did state he would prefer to end the series on a more upbeat note.

I really don't see the point of another book. The whole appeal of the series wasn't the plot as such, it was the wonderful surrealistic writing. Even the 4th book wasn't great IMHO.

Yup, there definitely was a peak in the first two books, and it was downhill after that. My favorite scene was where they left Marvin to defend them against the giant killer robot, and the humans all ran off.

18 months - about right. Friends - I have that 'friendship ADD' thing, which means I have a lot of friends I've not seen in a long time, and don't have enough (or *any*) friends who are around *now* .
All Windows versions are evil.
And Unseen Academicals is a pretty good new Pratchett - and we're not going to get many more of them, are we? - while And Another Thing... is someone's fanfic.

I think the smoking one is REALLY pushing the radio buttons to encouraging commenting principle!
