As oft-remarked, "Reality has a well known liberal bias."

You have to consider the Republican parties recent "war on science" and the comments made by Palin about the usefulness of fruit fly genetic research.

Also the tendency for Scientists to be agnostics/atheists likely leads them away from a party that is pro-church and gains much of it's support from the Born Again Christian community.

That and again it would be good to see what kind of "liberal" is being referenced here.

From context I assume they mean "liberal" in the American sense of "not a completely barking right-wing nut-jub".
