I understand the problem! I'm playing Devil May Cry 4 on the PS3 and last night I extended a bridge to a new area and then proceeded to spend ten minutes tracing my route back through almost all of the areas I'd already been through before realising that I actually needed to take a left turn from where I was already and just cross the bridge. Sigh.
