Step 1: Record a 13 second clip with a webcam.
Step 2: Realise it's 167MB, because I recorded in 640x480
Step 3: Attempt to use Windows Movie Maker to resize it.
Step 4: End up with a completely black screen and no sound in the movie it creates.

Does anyone have any recommendations for free software to resize AVI files?

Professionally speaking, I don't know of better resizing software than VirtualDub for under about a grand, so good call.

To resize and reduce quality down to YouTube level I just use YouConvert Classic.

There's also avidemux as an alternative to virtualdub and virtualdubmod (which can deal with MKV containers, unlike its ancestor). avidemux is currently being supported and upgraded unlike the virtualdub packages.

I've used virtualdub in the past -- I'm currently using xvid4psp but I don't like it much.
