I think Hitler also goes into my L Ron Hubbard file - "I wish I'd thought of it first". Only without the invading the USSR, and the pointless and wasteful genocide. Other than that, commanding an empire from a mountain lodge with a host of minions vying for my approval, and storm troopers that could actually shoot, sounds pretty sweet.

People may realise they are overweight, but I will wager many people don't realise they are obese.

I didn't and it forced me to do something about it. Now I am just overweight huzzah!

Also answer is between "buck up" and "encourage gently"

People who are obese often don't realise it because the BMI definition for obese covers people who don't look anything like the headless fatties you get next to every scare story about the OMG OBEEEESITY CRISIS.

Yup, although I was well aware I was overweight...

Yet those of us who are visibly fat rather than BMI-fat are assumed to be unaware of it, because obviously if fatties knew we were fat, we'd just lose weight and not be fat any more! Or something.

For item number 2 it's about 50-50 depending on the person in question.

People generally do realise that they're overweight & may or may not want to do something about it. If they do, great, but ultimately it's not my business unless they're morbidly obese and invading my person space on a plan / train.

I generally keep my mouth firmly shut on other people's weight unless they speak to me about it (and even then I'm pretty guarded), but I'll admit I get angry about a lot of the crap that's spouted about weight in the media & the nonsense that comes out of the mouths of fat & thin alike.

I could get into a bit of a rant about what I *would* like to tell the significant proportion of people I see with weight issues & very wrong-headed ideas about weight, but I'll maybe count to ten and see whether I'd like to post something about it in my own journal.

FWIW, I think I find ten people saying "by the way, you really should do something about X" more helpful than one person saying "YOU FUCKING MORON! YOU NEED TO DROP THE REST OF YOUR LIFE AND TAKE CARE OF X IMMEDIATELY! I CAN DO IT SO WHY IS YOUR LIFE SO FUCKED UP!" :)

I'd like to see a poll about whether people believe that people who appear to be underweight according to BMI standards should be confronted about it, and in what terms, and how to encourage them to gain weight. (I am assuming your #2 was meant to reference weight loss in fat people?)

If I am correct in making that assumption wrt #2, I would note that as a fat girl, I really do not want outsiders making any comment on my weight at all, even encouraging "have you been losing weight? You look great! You're doing so well!" comments. I've been attempting to become healthier and it's a complicated process and every time that someone tells me I look like I've been losing weight, all I can think is that if they're noticing that then they are surely noticing it when/if I fall down for a bit and gain a few pounds. My weight is my own business and I do not wish to hear comments from anybody about it unless I open the discussion myself. I guarantee you that I have thought as long and hard about weight as anybody and have arrived at some firm conclusions, some of which are at odds with the general population's, and not one of which is going to be changed by someone's unsolicited remarks on the subject.

My general flist was getting really cluttered and way out of control, and I was barely commenting on anyone's journal for awhile. So I made some filters to streamline things, so I could read in sections throughout the day. I'm happy to feel more involved in my friends' journals, after I'd missed so much stuff for so long. :)
