Re: Walkmans vs iPods

"I'm relieved that the majority of technological advancement happened before I was born."

D'oh!

Clearly that could never apply to anyone before 1996. Back in the days of the walkman, we had to invent fire, the wheel, writing, music, astronomy, cartography, electricity, the motor car, etc. in the 13 or so years between my birth and 1984!

Kids these days, don't even know they're born... blah, blah... etc., etc :)

I saw that article about the walkman and laughed in several places.
I remember setting up a walkman "dock" in my room which meant I could play music through two cabinet speakers I got hold of.

What I'd heard about divorce and children is that it's good if one or both of the parents are abusive to the other, but bad for the children if the parents divorce because they've drifted apart.

And it's got something else I haven't heard before-- that divorce is mostly good for children if it ends the conflict between the parents. Not such a win if the conflict continues.

My walkman and I were inseperable. And while I'm fond of my mp3 player, I miss the artistry of mixtapes.

I was given a Walkman II (which is a much more practical beast than the original) as my (high school) graduation present in 1982. It was wildly expensive and utterly transformative; we have become so used to carrying our music with us I think we forget. I remember very clearly how it felt, at least in part because I had the same feeling *again* when I first played with an iPod.

I is confused.

I has my current Walkman on my desk next to me, it's dead good, has loads of features, and is much better than an iPod in almost every respect.

The attached built in digital camera and twitter update function (SMS) is useful, I'm not quite so sold on the way it can also be used for people to "ring" me, never did quite get the point of that one.

My old tape walkman was green, still sat ina cupboard at my parents I think.
