The BNP is being ordered to open up its membership to _anyone_ - regardless of race.

Wouldn't it be funny if they were forced to open up, a couple of million people joined, and completely changed the party...

This should be encouraged: if a "British National Party" must exist at all, then it should properly reflect the wide cultural and racial diversity of the UK.

(Related point: I've long thought it a shame that the Union Flag has in recent years been adopted by people whose aims are unpleasantly divisive in nature.)

It reminds me of something that was said about the NRA in 'The West Wing': why don't all the anti-gun lobby join the NRA and vote it out of existence?

Reminds me of the racist LJ community [livejournal.com profile] fuck_arabs which was pirated to become pro-Arab, with members posting photos of Arabs they'd like to fuck.

Yes, but...

It wouldn't be democratic, would it?

You could, but it would come down to whether or not it's OK to cheat in order defend the institutions you believe in, and whether the institutions can survive that.

I do indeed. That's why your LJ is always an interesting place.

That would be absolutely brilliant.

Well, that approach is more-or-less what the anti-whaling movement did to the International Whaling Commission in ... er, I think the late 70s/early 80s, when a boatload of nations with no history of whaling and no desire to start joined up, and passed the commercial whaling ban. It's not been a complete success, but it did work to a large extent. (ISTR the whaling nations have more recently wised up to the tactic and are trying to sign up members sympathetic to them.)

Depending on how much membership fees are to join the BNP and the number of members they were to get from opponents joining, could they use such schemes to bankroll their 'repatriation' policies?

Hell, how many white people would like to emigrate but don't have the money to do so?

That would indeed be gloriously amusing.

i've not seen their standing orders but assume it would take over a year to transform the party, so you'd end up bankrolling racists for that time. A couple of million people at £25/year subscriptions is £50,000,000. they'd be laughing all the way to the bank...

That would be pretty funny...

It would also be kind of hilarious if thousands of people joined, each paid the standard £30 membership fee, and found they were still outnumbered and unable to actually change anything...

Would be amusing but... Until it happened I can't think of anyone who would like their name associated with the membership...
