"41" for me means averaging around 100 tabs in two FF windows.
Apparently I'm an outlier on this poll, next nearest is 37 at the time of commenting.

I'm interested to know how that's in any way practical. How many screens to you have? How big are they? Why do you have so many open? Once you have to scroll that far to the side to get to a tab wouldn't it take less time just to bookmark things on your toolbar or somewhere like that and reload them when you get to them - given how powerful your puter must be to deal with that many tabs simultaneously I'm assuming loading times would hardly be an issue...

I've only got about 13 open on this computer (at my parents') but my own tends to average around 70. It's because...basically I never go back to things if I bookmark them, but if I leave them open in a tab I will get to them. I tend to have all my "usual" sites, plus anything interesting-looking that's been linked to from someone's journal/twitter/fb gets opened in a new tab, and often stays open so I remember to link to it next time I post. A bunch of TV Tropes pages, usually, because it's so branch-y, it's impossible to read linearly. Sometimes even things just I want to show people next time they come round.

Once you get to 10 tabs or so open in Firefox there's a drop-menu at the right that lets you see the full titles of them all and go straight to them.

*nods* I know about the drop-menu collapse thingy (I do hit fifteen or sixteen sometimes but that's about my limit). But given that the bookmarks toolbar does exactly the same thing, and, as you say, most of the tabs aren't visible to you anyway, how is it different or more or less convenient? Less so for the browsing-of-the-now, but for the ones you plan to go back to?

I guess it's six and half a dozen if your computer can handle that many tabs..

The simple answer is "seems to work for me" :)
One screen (laptop, 17"/widescreen). 2.2GHz Core2Duo, 2Gb RAM, so I guess it's reasonably powerful.
There are options in about:config which let you adjust the size and spacing of the tabs on the tab bar - 55 tabs fit across the screen for me, so I don't need to scroll too much. I have lots of tabs open for LJ and Dreamwidth and Facebook and similar sites (on LJ, I have different filters for various groups, on DW I use the default filters for people/communities/feeds). I have a bunch of sites open that I look at every day or two, a bunch of "I'm going to get around to reading that one day" tabs open, and ... stuff. I do a lot of bookmarking too, but bookmarked stuff tends to get forgotten, or at least not revisited any time soon.

Every now and then FF crashes, fortunately Session Manager usually recovers everything ok (takes a while, depending on how many pages are cached vs reloaded).

I have a stupidly enormous amount of tabs open in three windows. It's a wonder the machine hasn't crashed.

One of these days I'm going to hit 1000 tabs. I think I need treatment.

Or a [livejournal.com profile] linkfrenzy post :-)

Yes indeedy: one's on it's way (over half full already, and the tabs for them have already been closed).

Of course, I can only run so many links in a [livejournal.com profile] linkfrenzy before the size limit hits...

So that early statement should actually read: "more than one's on their way".
