I just read something recently that suggested that quizzes like these really suck in that they try to shoehorn us into an axis that's really pro-libertarian but won't admit it.
As I said on my journal the political compass version I like has economic freedom ranging to economic constraint on one axis and personal freedom to personal constraints on the other. I find it much more accurate, but generally I don't use a quiz to place myself; I just point at a bit on the page and go "there, I go there". And then we have fun placing everyone else on the world in relation to ourselves. It's a fun pub game once you get through all the world leaders past and present and then move onto penguins and dolphins.
