According to ValleyWag LJ's just 20 of their 28 staff.  Don't know how reliable these reports are, but I hope that you've all got a backups of your journal.

I also hope those nice Dreamwidth people are actually doing something, so that I can jump ship when the time comes...

The numbers are wrong; it was 13 laid off and 17 still on staff. But yeah, no severance package. Stay classy, SUP. Stay classy.

Regrettably, that's Windows-only. For those with *nix systems and who aren't afraid of Perl, sixapart.com has an LJ backup script (http://code.sixapart.com/svn/livejournal/trunk/src/jbackup/jbackup.pl).

Some clients will do it, and Greg Hewgill has written little scripts to do it (that's nice cos it gets entries and comments). There's also a LJ's export page which gets you entries, but not comments.

The format you get will depend on the tool you use, I guess: Greg Hewgill's script just dumps out the XML that LJ sends back into a text file on your hard drive. If you wanted to upload stuff to another blogging service, you (or someone else, if you're not a programmer) would need to write a conversion tool.

"Turn your journal into a PDF book"

Works very well. Slight security risk in that you have to give them your password but you can change it before and afterwards, and they've been going years without getting themselves a bad reputation.

I use lj archive: http://sourceforge.net/projects/ljarchive/ It downloads your entries and comments to your computer and can be used with most if not all of the lj clones - I use it on Journalfen as well.

So what are you thinking, the site's just going to disappear? Is there any chance it'd be sold off to another company? If they decide to cut their losses and run and thus the outlay of money to buy the site is fairly minimal, would that keep the site up? How much does it cost to run a site like LJ on a day-to-day basis anyway?

Plus, they'll not have enough devs to make any new features, the usability project will probably go down the tubes, if [livejournal.com profile] marta's gone what rudiments of PR they have are gone too...
