*Talking about The Last Starfighter*
Andy: I'm not sure it was any good - it was fun in the eighties.
Julie: I like eighties movies.
Andy: Like The Princess Bride.
Julie: I didn't like it - I hated the main woman in it.  She was so insipid.
Andy: Princess Buttercup?  She was a fairytale princess!
Julie: Fairytale Princesses don't prance around in sparkly shoes, they take them off and batter people to death with them!

Julie must be put to death with fire.

She did end up marrying a pirate so she can't have been completely hopeless.

Hmm...she might have been insipid, but unfortunately that's more to do with the writer than anything else. I've read the 'book' of The Princess Bride, which is actually just the screenwriter wittering on about stuff to do with the film, as well as tell a version of the story which is slightly different to that shown in the film. And the treatment/depiction of Buttercup would turn pretty much any woman into a feminist.

The film is still great, though, but The Last Starfighter is also most excellent (cheesey, but in a good way :P).

Hmmm.... I like princess bride, but hate buttercup.

There is a wonderful hello kitty episode which points out to all small girls that prince charming is an sexist jerk and you should just fix these problems yourself (with the aid of your parents if too young).

I really like the Beta Unit in The Last Starfighter: the guy they send into replace Alex while he's saving the universe. He reminds me a lot of [livejournal.com profile] octopoid_horror.

Also, this is kind of disheartening:

Of the six people interested in "Gunstars" on livejournal: one of them is me, one is a friend, two are actually interested in the unrelated game "Gunstar Heroes" and one is Grig, a character from the film.

Grig's never updated. I'm guessing bumpy gnarled lizard hands make it difficult to blog.

Unlike everyone else I feel a great need to express the utmost devotion to Julie for that last statement. WHOO!!!

But Princess Bride still rocks. And Buttercup's not insipid; she's not very bright, but she does her best.

Has Julie ever considered a career in fairytale-writing?
