That latter bit reminds me of an incident with my mother. I often left my bike outside as a kid; mine was a cheap brand, and there was pretty much zero bike theft because we lived in a good neighborhood in Southern California where almost no one bothered with bikes. Anyway, she fake-stole it -- and after a lot of freaking out, I found it a couple days later. Which taught me that my instincts were still right and that she wasn't necessarily trustworthy.
