Thanks, but actually getting a good crop where you could read the text was the hard part.

That's the problem I usually have - resizing usually horribly mangles text. I ought to retype it with a tiny font, but I can't usually be bothered with that amount of exertion.

There are tricks you can use, but they take some skilz.

At some point you must show me said skilz. Cos it would make my icons suck less.

And for some reason I find the text easier to read in the colour one.

It's because there's less white space overall. With black on white, it's all negative vs positive space, then with the colour the text is the highest contrast part of the image, so...

Yeah, I figured my brain was finding it easier to identify the text sections of the icon when they were the only black/white area.
