Attitudes to music

Someone I used to work with had been bought an ipod.  She was a bit upset when she went to use itunes because she was sure she'd been told that it was free to download stuff.

So she asked around and some guy at work gave her this website that was like itunes but free...  I can't remember which site it was, but it was one of the big torrent search sites.  she had no idea.

Similarly, someone I work with now didn't understand how it all worked.  She knew mp3s cost money, but she also knew her kids didn't need to get her to pay for the music they downloaded, so she assumed there were just nice free sites for it.  funnily enough, there were -free- sites, but not -quite- with the same legality as itunes...

Which just goes to show...

I remember when you could download music from dodgy sites.

Then when it came all programe file sharing related... I learned to do that...

Now I just get confused. I understand bit torrent but often have trouble getting what I want in a reeasonable time frame.

However I've never been short of people with this knowledge and skill in their head... So its never been that much of a problem.

I think the context was kinda relevant - you were saying people were aware of the illegality of what they were doing... I was providing examples of people who weren't.

If you don't read the technology/web sections of newspapers/websites then large chunks of the whole OMG file sharing=evil/omg file sharing=future debate will pass you by.

They didn't connect downloading music or TV in this fashion to watching a pirate film. I -think- it's because some of them still bought dodgy pirated down-the-market/bloke-in-pub pirate DVDs.... so getting TV or music for free didn't seem like the same thing.

It was interesting because obviously it's a very different view of things to mine and that of most of my chums.
