Date: 2007-10-06 09:52 am (UTC)I'm not seeing it as a selling point.

Date: 2007-10-06 09:54 am (UTC)Status updates aren't generally terribly serious - but I still enjoy them.

Date: 2007-10-06 09:58 am (UTC)2] I could post a poll, or indeed just a post, and people could comment
3] I could post a photo and people could comment. Or I could use something like Dontstayin
I'm not saying facebook is crap, just that it doesn't offer me anything over livejournal. If I didn't have an LJ, I could use a facebook. But I don't want to, for example, use something like FriendsReunited, so my facebook friends would just be my LJ friends.. so really, there's no reason to have one in addition to this.

Date: 2007-10-06 10:01 am (UTC)(3) Again - it doesn't really have the same effect. I can tell when people have added photos of me (and remove the tag from them if I so wish), see all photos of particular people, etc.
None of which is _vital_ technology, just extra stuff I appreciate.
I don't think of Facebook as a replacement for Livejournal. They're different kinds of sites and I use them for different things.

Date: 2007-10-06 11:10 am (UTC)Problem with posting a poll is it relies on the people you want to see it actually looking at LJ during the timescale it's a current post. Event invitations and similar are pro-active, they go to them. LJ is a reactive medium, it relies on people logging in that day. Fb is very pro-active, when they log in, they'll get a list of invites, etc, and if they've got the setting up, then it'll be emailed as well.
Plus you can invite people without a facebook account to events, so people that never use it can still be told it's happening, respond to the invite, etc.
I see Fb as a bloody good complement to LJ—some friends have said they're using Fb completely and dumping LJ—I regret this, but accept it, they were never really 'bloggers' by inclination anyway. Fb offers some stuff that LJ does better, but most of what it offers LJ doesn't.
For a start, challenge anyone with a Fb account to a game of Scrabble fairly easily. Yes, you could play online elsewhere, but it doesn't have the convenience of being on one place, etc.
They complement. But you could keep using the calculator if you wish ;-)
@Andrew: Smartarse. Might try that one at some point. Maybe.
