I stopped making any use of them at all a while ago because they were so eratic to be honest. These days I do it all through the [Messages] tab at the top of myLJ.

Except that that doesn't show replies to your comments...

Turned out the problem was with my mail server anyway.

It does, you just have to pin them for notification...
