Kermit the Frog sings "Hurt".

I'm still torn between the Johnny Cash version and the original.

As linked to from discussion of the 25 mopiest songs on the journal of [livejournal.com profile] despotliz.

Bafflingly many people seem to think that Eleanor Rigby isn't sad. As the lyrics are hideously depressing and its use at the beginning of Yellow Submarine is basically to show the miserable nihilism and certainty of death inherent in real life (before the fab four head off into adventures of psychedelia and fantasy), I really can't see what the objection is. It remains, of course, one of my favourite songs ever.

As a completely mopey semi-depressive, I am shocked at how few of those songs I recognize.

Though I will say "Brick" pisses me off more than it depresses me.

Am I the only person who loathes Amy Winehouse? Don't hold back if I am. It won't be the first time that I've loathed the best thing since white bread.

Nope you aren't the only one. I actually saw her live in Manchester about 2 years ago and was less than impressed as she appeared on stage clearly drunk, and was unable to remember the words to her own songs. Following that, we were treated to an incoherant rant about dope for 10 minutes. Fans will undoubtedly say that is part of her persona or something, but I was just plain unimpressed.

There are an awful lot of songs people happily hum or sing along to without ever thinking about the lyrics. Elanor Rigby is just one of them, probably because it has an upbeat melody, which is easy to recognise and sing along with.

The list omitted "tears in heaven" so it loses points right there.

I swear I have a version of "Eleanor Rigby" being done by Type O Negative somewhere...they certainly did "Day Tripper"...

Yeah, and Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds isn't about drugs.

Hur hur hur hur hur...

The first time I ever discovered how to crawl was when Yellow Submarine was on the telly, and I crawled up to it because I liked it so much.

Later, Yellow Submarine scared me, particularly the bit where the vaccuumy beast sucks everything up, but the beatles escape through the hole in their pocket, thus introducing me to metaphysics and existentialism at a very early age.

The other fun cartoon I was shown as a child was Animal Farm.

Sneaky intellectual socialist parents!

Plus, Johnny Cash's version, obviously. Trent Reznor should have been shot for whining a long time ago.

And everybody hates Amy Winehouse.

That was cool, although I never want to see a frog cooking heroin again.

They somehow missed Adrian by Jewel.

That song can ruin my whole week.

As a child, Eleanor Rigby was one of my favorite songs. I would play it over and over, and I think it is solely responsible for my great love of strings in pop-ish music. I suppose my parents should've anticipated a goth phase.

Still, it also remains one of my favorite songs, just like Hot Chocolate's "You Sexy Thing."
I've grown up, but my taste in music is still insanely bipolar.
