Just scanning the monthly email OKCupid sends me, and was trying to decide which of the following two women were scarier - the one who didn't read, or the one whose favourite book was The Fountainhead.

[Poll #945334]

Hey, *I* like the Fountainhead!!
It's more or less a bodice ripper with architecture bits if you ignore the politcs:)

Well, personally I would say this is arrogant elitism.

Not really, just compatibility.

If you are so easily scared by someone who doesn't read books then I think you are limiting your range of "compatible" people considerably. However I was refering to your comment aimed at me directly, not at the original choice between two romantic interests, so compatibility doesn't come into it.

That I hardly ever sit down to read through book is not 'scary' by the very definition of the word, infact I don't even think it is unusual. That is not to say I never read of course, but due to the nature of my work as a programmer and my interests, the majority of words I read are on websites. I find it a whole lot less cumbersome than having to hold onto a book with both hands and winding up with a sore neck.

My response was intended to be light-hearted, but to follow your serious lead I can only say this. I don't really find you or any other non-reader scary as such. I just find conversation extremely difficult with anybody at all who does not share some kind of frame of reference. e.g. my Dad, in almost all respects we a very compatible indeed but conversation between the two of us is all but impossible because as a non-reader he fails to understand or even recognise many of my observations or comments. He is in all other aspects a very intelligent and capable man so I find this frustrating. My problem, not his.

...I really don't think I could choose. I wouldn't have much in common with either. *remains unable to pick one over the other*

Yay, someone agrees with me :) or perhaps I agree with them?

Or perhaps we both picked the lesser of 2 evils.

I've dated libertarians before. While I don't agree with everything they believe, I can find points of agreement. And sometimes there can be intelligent debate and discussion (I say "sometimes," because some libertarians are ummm, well, unwilling to acknowledge other viewpoints).

Non-readers? I do. not. grok. Seriously, people who don't read baffle me. I can sort of understand if they have some sort of dyslexia, etc., but.... No books? Eeeek! Books make up much of my conversational topics!

I had a libertarian friend once. He was basically a good guy. I prefer libertarians to conservatives by miles, and I'd probably still sleep with a conservative over a non-reader.

Surely going out with someone who's "scary" in itself is a no?

Aw, c'mon

Gotta be the scary libertarian woman. Trust me, they can be wonderfully assertive!

Mind you I did once date a girl who had never heard of "Ghostbusters"...
