mrmoonpants and I went to The Illusionist first, since it came out first over here and since we're into that sort of thing, and we had ourselves a fine time of it. And then we saw The Prestige and thought, ouch, this inevitable comparison is a rather unkind one -- and a rather unfair one to boot, as the two movies are really only alike in that they're both about Victorian magicians. But you can't not.
I'm interested to see how the former shapes up for someone who saw the latter first, and can't wait to hear your thoughts on it!
And yes, I've spent far too many minutes saying "Yes, they're both about Victorian magicians. But I'd like to see a Carter Beats The Devil movie too. Because you can never have too many magicians."
I must also get around to reading Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrel...
My problem with so many of these magician movies is basically, show me more magic! Your canoodling with plot is all fine and dandy, but I want to see more of the stage show! ...And I don't know if anyone else has this problem, but I appreciate magicianship most when it's all skill, and tend to be disappointed when the story pulls a 'surprise! it's actually magic!' twist. (The Prestige had a far, far better reason than most for doing such a thing, but I never quite forgave it for that.)
I have never read Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrel, but should perhaps put it on my to-do list.

Actually done a lot better in the film than in the book, IMHO. It's not really magic though is it? It's no more magical than Michael Caine's character's contraptions.
In the same way that Tranformers the Movie is better than Gobots: Battle of the Rock Lords, The Prestige is better than the Illusionist.

I'm pretty sure you -can- have too many magicians. There's undoubtedly a proverb about it.
