One of the reasons I'm currently sojourning in Kent with my parents is that my Dad's just had an operation on his leg to strip out the faulty varicose veins he had. He was under general anaesthetic for it, so we were all slightly worried, as this is never risk free (especially at the age of 62). I was therefore gratified to get this email while I was on the train down:

His majesty is lying prone on the settee that I have pulled in front of the bar and is surfing the television offerings for something to watch at 3 in the afternoon.

He is happy. He is comfortable (pain pills not yet needed).

His dog attends him. His wife runs in small circles.

Life is as normal.
