I'm halfway through watching Buffy Season 6 and am being pleasantly surprised. I know I'm running a little late on watching this, but Erin bought me the season for my birthday and I'm only just back in the country again to watch them.

I heard lots of talk from people on how the season wasn't nearly as good as the preceding ones. This is so far confusing me totally. Even excluding the amazingly fantastic musical episode "Once More with Feeling", I've so far been impressed with pretty much every episode bar the opening 2 parter (which felt overly clumsy in parts, the demons not being interesting in any way). Since then I've had almost no complaints, the only thing I'd change is that following Willow's descent into magical junkiedom, she went from teetering on the brink to addict to wanting to reform far too quickly, I'd have liked this to be stretched over a few more episodes.

But other than those few minor niggles I've been very impressed with the whole Spike thing and with Willow in general, I've loved the fact that the season has been more focussed on the characters than on "Monster of the Week" and my only current concern is that when people talk about the season going downhill they mean the episodes in the second half.

I loved season six. I realise I’m in the minority and I’m not denying the season had some major flaws. But I’d much rather see a series overreach itself than potter about for seven years doing the same thing (*cough* X-Files *cough*). I thought in series six there were some fantastic ideas executed to varying degrees of success.

The Willow magic addiction thread is cack-handed at first but (and I don’t want to say too much obviously) ultimately worth it. "Once More With Feeling". Best episode of a TV show ever made. Easily. "Tabula Rasa" was very, very good too. IMHO the second half of the series is much better than the first. It goes to some dark, dark places particularly in "Dead Things" and "Seeing Red". There are some very, very uncomfortable moments. I’d say that it hits a good stride from "Hells Bells" onwards and trips up slightly at the end.

Season seven is much better (so far). There has yet to be a single episode that made me want to stick nails in my eyes ("Doublemeat Palace" I’m looking at you) and a couple of standouts ("Beneath You" and "Selfless"). Its much, much funnier again, but still pleasingly dark. The only problem I have with it at this point is that its playing it too safe by covering old ground. Love spell episode? Check. An episode centred on one character that fleshes out their history with flashbacks? Yup.
