Plane from Exeter  -> Edinburgh was cancelled, due to faultiness.  This meant all of us were put onto the Glasgow flight instead, which dropped off Exeter->Glasgow people when we landed there, took on the Glasgow->Exeter passengers, did a sharp right turn, flew to Edinburgh, and dropped the Exeter->Edinburgh people off there, before (presumably) picking up Edinburgh->Exeter people and heading back South.

This meant that I arrived in Edinburgh at 10:30 rather than 8:30, rather ruining my ideas of a quiet end to my 4 days off.

Now to get some sleep, quickly!

By essex, do you mean stanstead? You should have driven for a further half an hour and dropped in for a cup of tea at stupid o'clock here instead! :P.

That happened to me in reverse when Ryanair said "oh yeah that flight to Dublin we booked you on wasn't real, take this flight to Edinburgh, which will take you to London, where you can transfer to Dublin" adding four hours onto my journey! Luckily I no longer fly with Ryanair

Well, this wasn't their fault, as the plane had landed in Exeter, but then developed a fault. They decided to put us onto the Glasgow plane rather than leave us waiting for the Edinburgh one to be fixed, which didn't seem unreasonable.

I've had the same happen once with RyanAir, when my Edinburgh->London plane diverted via Dublin, but only once.
