There is _always_ with new cats a moment of fright some time in the first 24 hours when it goes missing. When you chekc every room, cupboard, nook, cranny and loose floorboard in ever-increasing panic until you start wondering if the bloody animal somehow snuck out of the house despite the fact that the only door has categorically not been open since they were last seen.

In the end she was asleep _under_ the duvet in the spare room.

Bloody animals.

This is always that moment... freaks me out. i end up thinking of ways to torture the person who left the door open long enough for the little thing to escape. And then i find him sleeping behind the couch or some nonsense.

The other day my kitty had crawled under my mom's covers (why do they DO that?!) and she went to spread out the "lump" in her duvet and it moved... scared the hell out of her. heh.

The friend who keeps my cat (well, his cat now I guess) reported that after they moved, said cat managed to find some crawl space in the basement to sneak into and hide in for hours. The little beggars are good at that. :p

*!* we know that feeling :-( Except that last time one of ours went wandering and didn't come back it was 3 days before our wedding (to be followed by a 2 week honeymoon) and we were starting to come to terms with the fact that we were going to have to go on honeymoon not knowing where our furry babe was or whether she was injured or alive, and spending every day worrying about her. We flyered the entire village (approx 1000 homes) and put up notices in the vets, the village shop and registered her as missing with the Missing Pets Bureau.

She came back 24hours before we were due to leave for Edinburgh (she just plopped though the cat flap at about 11pm while my wife was in tears on the phone to her mum about it) with her fur matted, her tummy coated in blood and her paws all raw and she was very frightened. We took her to the vets, got her MOT'd (AOK!) and she went into kennels with her brother - we felt bad about it putting her in kennels after whatever ordeal she had been through but the people who run the 'Angelite Cats Hotel' are really good and they have a good rapport with our vet so we knew she would be safe and in good hands.

If you get a kotatsu, any cats suddenly become easy to find.
