Musical Requests
Oct. 16th, 2004 12:50 pmAfter I posted my somewhat miserabilist ravings concerning the lack of new things in the world I was somewhat shocked that nobody stepped in, slapped me upside the head and said "No, look, there are new things and here's one."
So here's a challenge for you - find me some new music - something that's somehow unlike anything I've heard before. I don't mean something wholly new - I'm fairly sure that there's nothing out there that's not at least _like_ something I've already heard - but something with a new twist, a new edge or a new background.
For instance, most of the music I've heard has been western in origin - I have a Talvin Singh album somewhere, but other than that I don't think I have _anything_ that's not part of the western hegemony. And presumably there are some cutting-edge artists out there in the middle/far east who are producing music unlike anything we tend to get over here.
Which isn't to say I want to be deluged in techno-banghra, but if you have something like that you think I should be listening to, throw it in my direction. My address is on my userinfo, my ftp is at ftp://andrewducker.dyndns.org and you can send me fairly large emails at andrew@notzen.com
Go on - surprise me. I promise to report back with a brief review/opinion of anything sent in my direction...
Oh, and if you leave me something, add a comment here so that I know to check...

Date: 2004-10-16 07:38 am (UTC)What I'm putting up is a bunch of live recordings of music done by various groups with which I was involved in college. They are, of course, both live and done by college groups, so the quality (in many senses) is variable at times, but I like these pieces.
I'll put up some more later.

Date: 2004-10-16 03:39 pm (UTC)Find some Muslimgauze and listen to it. There's a lot to choose from. It should satisfy your non-Western urges.
Now, staticy thuddy noise is hardly new to you but, in my opinion, the "Subfusc" album and the "Viva 6581" EP by Tarmvred are as good as it gets. Think thuddy rhythmic noise with (more so for the EP than album) C64 melodies. You'd probably like it, if you ever had a soft spot for old skool demos, back in the day. He doesn't just use a synth for the C64 bits... it's an actual C64 right there on stage when he's live.
Anything by Greenhaus might butter your muffin as well. It's hardly going to shock you to the core, but you'd probably like it. Sort of anthemic cinematic soundtrack music is one way of putting it. The more recent stuff has vocals, the older stuff doesn't.
Dead Hollywood Stars as well, the "Gone West" album being the important one. A long time ago I had this on your computer. Who knows if you kept it... It's semi-ambient, a little bit drum n bass-y in a low-key way, but is mostly a group of musicians who more regularly make industrial music doing what is essentially a soundtrack to a spaghetti Western. Half the tracks are mostly ambient, half aren't. It's -amazingly- good. I have told you about it before. I can run off a copy sometime if you don't have it.
If you want anything ambient, then I'd reccomend Lustmord. A lot.
Vromb are -really- good too. But hard to describe. Go play.
And finally, if you want something that you'll have heard things like before, but nothing -exactly- like, then check out Nymphomatriarch, by Venetian Snares & Hecate
It is made of samples of the two artists engaged in a variety of sex acts with each other, processed into some fairly intense breakcore.

Date: 2004-10-20 10:25 pm (UTC)I wish there were an easy way to pay artists for any individual songs one copies to give away like this... makes me feel guilty even though I'm partially doing it to promote the artists. And even though in your case, I get the feeling you'd support the artists by buying their cds if you really liked the music.
But with my mix-cd's I've given away... if I were to buy extra copies of cds to make up for the songs on the mix-cds I gave away, I'd still end up with extra cds, which wouldn't be much use except for giving away, which sort of defeats the logic somewhat... Think I was going to look up iTunes, but I don't know how much of a selection of music they really have. Or if they let you pay for the same song multiple times.
