Discussing what films have decent sex scenes, and indeed, why porn can't have a plot, I was wondering what films people could think of that had sex scenes in them that actually turned them on (as opposed to making them giggle or vomit).

The reason love scenes in movies appeal to me more than those in porn (generally, coz there's sme good porn out there) is the characters. The intimacy, or boundaries crossed, or darkness of two proper _characters_ having sex tends to eclipse two porn stars going at it, for me.

But then, for a lot of people, the 'going at it' is exactly what they want.

Even if the movie itself was not the best, I thought the "arming of the hero" scene in "The Last Samurai" was pretty sexy. Dressing instead of undressing can be very sensual. It is such in intimate thing. Doing something for someone else not because they are incapable of doing it but because they are beyond such tasks, because it is an act of worship and humbling.

I have seen a few other films with a slow dressing or undressing scene that was done well. Especially when the guy gets down to her stockings and earrings and then picks up the still in her panties and bra girl and tucks her into bed. At that point I want to door to close, leaving me out, or him to leave and let her fall asleep fantasizing about whatever and whomever she chooses.

Cheers for the new year.

Looking over the other answers, I would also agree that the sex scene in "Bound" was also excellent. I'd love to see a het sex scene that I didn't find either offensive or foolish, but such seems to be incredibly rare.

It's not usually the sex scenes that turn me on. "Love! Valour! Compassion!" did have a sort-of-sexual scene that turned me on. But it didn't end in sex, rather in a disagreement and cold hatred between the characters. Yep, that made it even more emotionally piquant.

Then there was another movie about forbidden/clandestine love between 2 gay men in olden/victorian? times which turned me on. But I don't remember what it was called.

Yup, totally. The most erotic scene in Mulholland Drive for me was when the two girls were playing 'Nancy Drew'.

Oooh, well said.

The first part, that is, not the second....

Agree with you totally about the arming scene in The Last Samurai. That was without a doubt one of the hottest scenes I have seen in a movie in ages.

I'm a sucker for silent heat between people, though.

It was hard to come up with any that really turned me on, which reminded me of how few good sex scenes there are in non-porn movies. Usually, I'm too distracted by the unrealisticness of the scene -- i.e., woman comes from vaginal penetration in 5 minutes with no other stimulation -- to be turned on. If it's done well enough, I can ignore the unrealistic way most movies portray sex, but it usually isn't. Pretty much all porn movies do turn me on, so it's not like it would be so difficult.

Either that, or they just aren't memorable. Or maybe it's my taste in movies -- if I look at a list of my favorites, none of them seem to have any sex at all.

I like how in a set up many writers and directors would "take all the way" they left it as it was - confusing, unfinished, not able to act.

Not all characters need to get in one last shag before heading out to face impending doom. Often it doens't happen, or rather it *shouldn't* happen.

In literary circumstances the "arming of the hero" is important because it is also pretty much the only place where the male form gets idealized, catalogued, and described in such detail. He is turned into an object to manly power and sensuality. Booya!

Cheers,

I was looking back through your postings searching for a comic you posted some time ago, when I came upon this posting, and felt my inner video clerk clamor to be let out. I highly recommend the movie Dangerous Beauty first of all because it is gorgeous (if somewhat lacking in plot) and it features Jacqueline Bissette who is my all time favorite sexy lady who I want to be like when I grow up. There is a love scene in the movie that shows the two main characters in love and having fun with being totally absorbed with each other. I don't know if I could honestly say it turned me on, but it is one of my favorites.
