Well, and here in Gascogne it's kind of typical, but not as explicit as in Rome.

8) It's more than that. Obama was determined to bring some Republican votes onto the ACA, not so much because he needed the votes (though that too) but to make it a bipartisan measure like LBJ's social reform measure had been. But even the most sympathetic Republican senators refused to do it, largely because (though they would never say this) McConnell would strip them of their seniority if they did anything that would benefit the Democrats.

I think it was a bloody stupid promise to make. And yes, they shouldn't have made it. But I won't blame people for losing trust in them if they break it.
