8) It's more than that. Obama was determined to bring some Republican votes onto the ACA, not so much because he needed the votes (though that too) but to make it a bipartisan measure like LBJ's social reform measure had been. But even the most sympathetic Republican senators refused to do it, largely because (though they would never say this) McConnell would strip them of their seniority if they did anything that would benefit the Democrats.

1) After 16h hours of domestic violence conference this week I can tell you that it's because 30% of women have a history of being strangled etc by men leaving them more vulnerable to all other illnesses and injuries.
