And it's what it's like wherever you live although now ten times worse in the US.

My being trans has never been on my medical record and no way am I 'out' in the real world. It isn't safe to be so.

The baby learning thing doesn't surprise me.
I'm doing Spanish in Duolingo, which has a lot of exercises where you match a sound heard to a printed word, phrase, or sentence. I find that reading the words interferes with my auditory memory and comprehension of them, and have taken to covering them up until after I have heard the speech.

I learned German initially almost entirely by audio courses. I agree that it seems the best way to start, and add the written language later. It helps avoid mispronunciations from using native language pronunciations where the foreign language shares a script.

Jane says that for at least the first year of her German course at school they didn't open a book, it was all listening/speaking.

One can imagine that once they have enough electricity for their own use they could export the surplus, generating valuable foreign currency.
