Yes, but he was on secondment from the KGB, and went back afterwards.

Unless he worked that case himself, he wouldn't know. It's not like everyone at KGB knows identities of all intelligence assets, past and present. And it looks like at the time he did not have a need to know. MVD was not in the business of recruiting foreigners.
