02:00

I wake up with the sense that something moved in the room. I look around. Nothing. I start to lie down, but am sure that I heard *something*. I put my glasses on and realise Sophia is standing about 1m away from the bed, not saying anything.

"What's wrong Sophia?"
"I woke up thirsty, but there was only water next to the bed, not blackcurrant."
I remember that they drank that bottle dry before sleep, I didn't refill it, and that while he will happily drink water she really doesn't like it and is likely to complain about it for longer than it takes me to walk downstairs and make her some squash. So I do that, put her back in bed and held her hand for about 30 seconds while she fell back to sleep. I then go back to bed, where It takes me an hour to fall back to sleep.

03:30

I hear movement from the corridor, plot an intercept course, and get to Sophia before she gets into the bedroom and wakes Jane up.
"Daddy, I saw a monster."
"No monsters. Lie down."
This time she takes about three minutes to fall asleep, and then she's holding my hand so tightly that she wakes up when I try and get it back.
Another couple of minutes later I get to escape back to bed, where I have weird dreams about being stuck under a blanket that's getting heavier and heavier while Jane watches me from outside. I wake up and start telling her about my strange dream, only to be woken up again from *that* dream to discover that it's

04:30

And Gideon is shouting "Daddy! Daddy!" Which is definitely an improvement over him demanding mummy, or just incoherently crying/screaming until I take him through to Jane.
I climb in next to him and give him a hug. He falls back to sleep near instantly, and I climb back out and go back to bed.

06:20

This time the shout *is* "Mummy! Mummy!", and both of them are awake, but I tell them both to lie down, they both do, Gideon nestles into me, and as my alarm is going to go off in 30 minutes I just pass out next to him.

06:50

Time to wake up. Nobody wants to.

Morning routine:

I get 5 minutes to wake up, then take Sophia through to our bed so that she gets to say good morning to Jane. About half the time she's only semi-conscious for this. About 10% of the time she's entirely asleep and only wakes up as I'm taking her to the bathroom 10 minutes later, complaining that she hasn't spent any time with mummy.

I try to then have her at the table in front of some cereal by 7:10. And then go and put some clothes on myself. And collect her school clothes from wherever they were distributed the previous night.

By 7:20 I'm making her packed lunch and making sure that both of their backpacks have hats and gloves in them. At this point Jane has Gideon up and is dressing him. About 1 day in 5 he'll ask for breakfast, but mostly he eats that at nursery.

At 7:30 she has to stop eating, Jane brushes her hair (she screams no matter what, but she holds still better for Jane), one of us puts her in her clothes (she can dress herself without help, but then I'd need to wake her up 10 minutes earlier).

At 7:38 we brush teeth. And then put outside clothes on. And have a quick argument over whether gloves are really necessary when it's only -2 outside.
And then at 7:42 we leave the house for a leisurely walk to the bus stop.
Or we finally make it out at 7:45 and sprint to the bus stop, one or the other.

Then the bus takes us across town. They either fight all the way there, or play noisily, or play a game on his tablet. At 8:30 we get to his nursery, then there's a fifteen minute walk to her school, and then I get the bus to work, upon which I am currently writing this sentence.

Heroic!

And it's funny / charming the small differences in families.

Me and my sister never drank before bed, and were never thirsty in the night. I am STILL pretty much never thirsty, ever! (which is why I drink a HUGE (750ml) mug of tea and another of coffee before work and another tea at lunchtime.

On the other hand (haha), gloves have always been an utter necessity anywhere under about 10C! At -2C (right now) I am in battery heated ones!

This is why I had short hair as a child and looked like a boy. My hair is horrible to brush, straight - wavy in front, curly at the back.

Miracle brushes were good, my current mix of boar and hard bristle is perfect.

I still hold the hair at the root so brushing the rest doesn't pull on the scalp when there are tangles.

I use silicon hairbands, plait it back and wear a headscarf to stop dirt and wind.

I used to find just using a TON of conditioner took out most of the issues.

Mine is at least straight so the wide bladed straighteners have made the whole thing a lot easier!

I agree with you about holding things at the root!

Yes. I only have wavy hair, but it likes to adhere to itself given the slightest chance.

That sounds very familiar. I hope that they're better at the whole nighttime/morning thing soon.

When we had kids, I became the family's official morning person. Now that they're all grown up and on their own, I have cats. Same thing.

No kids, one cat, one horrible bright streetlight that comes on at 5am for a fake "dawn" (or hunters moon?). I have a food automat that gives out a snack-sized portion of dry food at 5, then I get up at around 6 to feed him. In winter, he comes back to bed with me! In summer, I'll probably get up at 5 anyway.

Despite a cat flap, he tends to spend almost all of the night with me almost all of the time.

I am aware that I'm lucky!

I could not cope with this! (Which is one reason why I'm not a parent. The others being that I am too idle and selfish.)

There are photos of me as a child with a bob, but what I remember is the sheer work of having long hair. Washing, drying, combing, plaiting. After my first year of uni I got it cut off and never looked back.
