1. Well since your origins are in the same part of the world as mine, remember William Adams (aka Anjin Sama)? :o)

  1. Coming from a very Brit-influenced background, I found Japanese mores very congenial, except for their notion of a good time. Which was also British (go out in a group and get roaring drunk together) but my French half wanted some conversation, dammit.

Greedy Jobs and Executive Function Theft ... Software development has become FAR more of both in the past 5 years or so. At least for me. We used to have Sysadmins, Ops people, QA testers, DBAs, Support (customer, 2nd line) - as standard. Even in small companies. Putting things "in the cloud" and running DevOps does not take away the need for / advantage of specialists ...

Specialists we DID seem gain were the more technical kind of designers, but I've not done serious UI for years, so I am out of touch there.

Gossip from a recent conversation: Royal Mail has declared that their Data Centre is not a mission critical department, is dispersing its specialists among non-specialist teams, and leaving what's left in the hands of a generalist manager with no data expertise.

I think this might come back to bite them, she said, mildly...

Well. I am British after all. I believe in polite understatement.

Seriously. My interlocutor related a conversation that included the statement that RM can't afford non-critical departments. I shudder. I grant you that it probably not the _single_ most critical department they have, but IRL it must surely be one of the top three, and if that is not understood by the Board then they don't have a functioning business.

Well, they are hardly alone in that, are they?

I would waste time worrying if I thought it would do the slightest good. But it won't. We are at the mercy of our collective failures of understanding.

Ahem, actually transliterated into cuneiform. Hittite is a language, cuneiform is a script that the Hittites (and a number of other peoples in that part of the world) used. Apparently it was initally developed by the Sumerians.
