This evening, after me telling Sophia it was bed time, she:
* Decided she wanted to eat the rest of her dinner.
* And ⅔ of her brother's leftover dinner.
* Brushed her teeth
* And have her brother in bed with her for story time.
* Which devolved into them tickling each other, me taking him back through to Jane, and much screaming all round.
* Then saying she was still hungry, and eating a frankfurter and three fish sticks.
* During which I read her about five pages of The Hobbit.
* Her demanding to know what Bilbo looked like on a pony. So I showed her a photo.
* Then complaining that she was too hot, too cold, and not comfortable at all.
* Her turning her fingers into wolves who fought each other.
* Her announcing that she was not tired, but that she was bored, but that she would lie still for five minutes but then she would get up again.
* Her falling asleep about a minute after that.

(Normally it takes about ¼ of this faff to get her to sleep. Today was apparently her day to be infested by demons.)

Was younger than Sophia but my eldest went through a phase of being rather lively and cranky right before falling sound asleep.

That's just what I was thinking. All that food, wiggly, and yet still tired? Growth spurt.

I remember watching with admiration as a young mother pushed her child around Costco in the big cart. The child was chattering and wriggly busy, and the mother just kept up a tuneful droning humming that sync'd perfectly with the child's sounds. Sped up, slowed down, paused, became excited all in sync.

I mean, one doesn't develop that skill out of nowhere, but it was obviously soothing to both participants. The child felt "heard" and the mother wasn't having her attention yanked all over as the child's interest hopped from thing to thing.

It also kept "helpful" strangers at bay, since it was obvious the two were in mid-conversation.

Ooo
I've got the start of something to this Brahm's Lullaby:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IXcGORjWte8

Poor Sophia
Poor Sophia
She can't sleep 'cuz she's hungry
Poor Sophia
Poor Sophie
She's so hungry she can't sleep
She can't sleep while she eats
And she eats without sleeping
And she eats and she eats
And now she is too hot.
Poor Sophia
Poor Sophia
She has now heard The Hobbit
Poor Sophia
Poor Sophie
She is wondering 'bout the horse.

I've run dry now, and this is much more wordy than the humming I admired - but at least *I* had fun. ;)

I'd also go with growth spurt- sounds so familiar.
