3. I practice balancing on one leg for 30 seconds (each side) while brushing my teeth ever since I had a big vertigo and concomitant surgeries.

Great fun I'm sure. And I imagine it would be good early warning of any recurring issues!

I'm not sure from the article if the inability to balance is predictive of falls (so we should all be practising balance), or more indicative of general poor muscle tone, or a side-effect of other serious but perhaps yet unknown illnesses. Likely all 3!

I am 60 and cannot do 2 since the vertigo operations (I would fall, possibly badly), and also arthritis in my knees. 1 seems like a measure of what your daily life is like - I don't need a lot of grip strength as a secretary. I can lift the iron fry pan though, or carry a loaded laundry basket to the washer.

The 30-second balance is actually physical therapy. Since I already have vertigo and balance issues, I have to practice very day both to maximize my tolerance of the vertigo (teach my brain to function even though it thinks the world is moving) and to keep my ankles strong and my system reactive to lack of balance.

You are totally right, it really does depend... I've always been hopeless with heavy pans - but I can do chin ups, climb most things, pull ropes on a sailing boat and deadlift a fair bit of weight ... yet all my life I have often really hurt my wrists wringing out a cloth can't use a mouse in my right hand any more! My ankles are pretty useless too (reminds me, must do my Achilles exercises today!). I can't run at all but I never liked to. Maybe that's why my knees still work (so far):-).

Vertigo seems very trying to live with (I know a few people who have it). It's good that your practice seems to help.

If you haven't read "Why We Sleep: The New Science of Sleep and Dreams" by Matthew Walker, you should. It will terrify you into sleeping a full 7-9 hours per night. It certainly worked on me!
