I assumed this was going to be one of those "the government says the case rate is going down but reality says the case rate is going up" mysteries.

But it sounded like it was more genuinely about uncertain cause. I had assumed we were due an Omicron.2 wave (after previously hoping that had already been our most recent omicron wave). But I guess "we removed all restrictions" is also likely to lead to a new wave of infections, even though I hoped we'd somehow escaped that apparently inevitability... And I guess the other explanations are plausible too.

The article doesn't give any specific examples, but I was reminded of a comment in a review of Turning Red:

"And as long as we’re asking for the moon, there might have been one girl in Mei’s friend group who didn’t squeal over boys with the rest of them—one who, say, preferred girls. Maybe next movie."

We can but hope.

It's depressing that it never goes out of relevance. I still hope for a progressive future, though.
