Being a military historian, my reading sources on the Ukraine conflict have been mostly coming via military intelligence websites and the general view of the professionals is that they have got this horribly badly wrong.

Considering how every single historic attempt to invade Russia has come up hard against Rasputitsa, have you heard any reason why Russia's leadership ignored it in their timing of the invasion?

It's like the UK decided to invade Belgium, started driving its tanks towards the Hague, and forgot that the English Channel existed.

This could have worse outcomes than we fear, and that's if we win. Perversely so. We want Ukraine to survive and thrive, and for Putin to lose big and end up at the Hague to answer for everything, but we don't want Russia to go completely to pieces in the process. Do we?

Russia disintegrating sounds like it could be problematic (although no country lasts forever).

I'd be delighted by Moldova and Georgia joining the EU, as they are proposing to, if it can be done reasonably.
